Unlike classical dance (ballet), contemporary dance explores freer and more personal ways of communicating through movement. Clarification: this does not mean that classical technique is not taught; it is like in drawing: you have to know how to draw an eye in order to then do it in your own style.
I don't know why, but always I liked dance; so I tell my mom I wanted to do dance. And, maybe, a tuesday I prove in a academy called "Marcando tus Pasos" and I liked it and I was there until 2023.
The first time I dance in a stage was in 2014 in the city theater of Corrientes (I was 4 y/o); then, we presented several plays al the Vera theater. My first competition was in 2018 in Mercedes. I don't know what position we finished in; and, in a competition in 2023 we came in 1st place.
In 2024, my mom changed me to the academy I´m now called "Estudio Fusión Danza" because at the other academy we had exams from the Fracassi Conservatory (which is for dance teachers) but it wasn't always possible "because it's very expensive".
Storie
Contemporary dance emerged in the mid-20th century as a continuation of the renewal initiated by modern dance, which reacted against the restrictive dynamics of traditional dance at the end of the 19th century. Prominent dancers at that time included Americans Loie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Ruth Saint Denis, Martha Graham, and Doris Humphrey, German Mary Wigman, and Austro-Hungarian Rudolf von Laban.
In 20th-century Germany, physical expression evolved into Expressionism, a movement that sought to integrate itself into the arts, especially dance, and which later influenced the United States. Émile Jaques-Dalcroze stood out with his eurythmic method, which linked music and movement and divided the body into spiritual, emotional, and physical dimensions, influencing figures such as Isadora Duncan. This movement transcended borders thanks to exponents like Mary Wigman and Hanya Holm, establishing itself as a key foundation in the evolution of modern dance.
Throughout this period, artists such as Trisha Brown, José Limón, and Merce Cunningham emerged. In 1958, Alvin Ailey founded the American Dance Theater, with a proposal that blended theater with African American and Caribbean dances. In 1976, Pina Bausch established a unique form of dance with dramatic elements, which she named dance theater.
In Argentina, María Fux, Ana Itelman, and Renate Schottelius are considered the main pioneers of this dance style. Currently, Patricia Stokoe and her team are a major reference point for Body Expression because they laid the foundations for educational or free dance. In 1988, the profession was officially recognized with the inauguration of the national body expression teacher training program.
